Joint book signing May 6th — great gifts for mom!

Need a gift idea for Mother's Day? Join Judith Burnett Schneider, Julie Long and Lisa Curry for a multiple booksigning at Barnes & Noble in Cranberry Township, PA on Saturday May 6th from 2 - 4 p.m. They'll speak briefly about their publishing experiences and you can pick up custom-signed copies of their books:

The Frantic Woman's Guide to Life (co-authored by Judith)
BABY: An Owner's Manual (co-authored by Julie)
Chicken Soup for the Mother of Preschooler's Soul (with Lisa's story "Food for Thought")
Chicken Soup for the Working Woman's Soul (with Lisa's story "The Scooby Doo Band-Aid")
Chicken Soup for the Fisherman's Soul (with Lisa's story "The Native" and Julie's story "The Worm")

Okay, so that last one might not be a great gift for Mom, but remember Father's Day is June 18th!

"My Dog Has a Biochemist"

It's a little embarrassing, but true. Lucy, my English bulldog, currently receives better healthcare than I do. You can read all about it in the Life Support column I wrote for the PIttsburgh Post-Gazette. Or download a PDF of the piece on my website julie long writes.

NaNoWriMo: Time to prepare

2005_participant_med.gifAs promised in this space previously, I have signed up for NaNoWriMo 2005. I have completed the next step as well: creating a working title. The project is called Love in the Time of Caller-ID. (With apologies to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, plus a promise to change the title as soon as I can -- once I discover what the novel is actually about.)

I'll be blogging daily about my fast-paced writing adventures on my personal site, My Brilliant Mistakes. The real writing doesn't start until November 1 of course, but for this final week I'm preparing by listing elements to include in the story, defining lead characters, loosely outlining the plot, and so forth. Drop by and check on my progress; if you're WriMo-ing too, let me know how it's going for you.

Surround Yourself with Fat Plum

Have you had a chance to check out our stuff?

Our "I sat down today to write..." coasters have been very popular with writers (and many non-writers), so we've created t-shirts and tote bags to tell the procrastinating tale. And we added other great treats for writers and readers, like writing logs and bookmarks. They're all available for purchase in our store. See the menu to the left -- it drops down to show you the full list. Shop the day away!

412: The Pittsburgh Creative Nonfiction Literary Festival

An event you won't want to miss: 412: The Pittsburgh Creative Nonfiction Literary Festival.

I'll be part of a panel discussion Sunday morning, talking about online publications. Fat Plum will have items available in the Media Fair over the weekend, so stop in and see us!

From the webpage:

The Pittsburgh Creative Nonfiction Literary Festival
For Readers, Writers & Publishers
Featuring John Edgar Wideman, Richard Nash, the 412 Media Fair and More
November 12-14, 2004

WHAT IS 412?
The First Annual Pittsburgh Creative Nonfiction Literary Festival

412 is a week of readings, lectures, parties and workshops featuring literary Pittsburgh, from colleges and universities to city magazines and newspapers to indie and online publications.

412 expands the local audience and introduces new publishing projects that represent the future of Pittsburgh and creative nonfiction.

412 showcases Pittsburgh's great writers, independent publishers and venues.

412 encourages locals to support local literary initiatives by volunteering, attending events and submitting their work.

412 is the place where students, teachers, authors and readers converge in an atmosphere of creativity, optimism and celebration of Pittsburgh's unique place in the literary world.

Creative nonfiction is shorthand for an exciting genre that encompasses the hard-hitting honesty of journalism and the dramatic techniques of fiction. Creative nonfiction is no oxymoron; it?s gripping stories that happen to be true.

In addition to the presentations and media fair over the weekend, 412 is sponsoring a variety of parties and gatherings the whole week leading up to it, culminating in a book party on Friday, November 12.

Full details can be found here. I hope to see you there!

Pittsburgh Today LIVE -- tomorrow!

Tuesday, September 13, I'll be appearing on KDKA's Pittsburgh TODAY Live to talk about Fat Plum and the upcoming Book Boot Camp. I'll be explaining how the camp works and offering advice for writers who are just getting started or who stalled in their projects.

There's always the chance I'll panic in the spotlight, and the only words I'll be able to produce will be "Fat Plum." Or maybe "Cheers, thanks." So tune in and see how I do!

Good News

I wanted to share some good news. A few months back, I was interviewed for an online feature at www.writersbreak.com, a great Web resource for writers. I just received word that they revamped and reintroduced their site for the fall, and they decided to feature my interview on their new home page. I've been told by one editor that my answers were refreshingly "open and honest", so if you have the time, take a look.

Go to www.writersbreak.com and click on my name, Judith Burnett Schneider.

If you have questions or comments regarding the subject matter discussed, contact me at judy@fatplum.com. I'd be happy to hear what you think. --Judy

Cindy talks about online writing markets

I'll be venturing away from my keyboard and out into the real world this week. Thursday evening at 7pm, I'll be speaking at the Barnes & Noble in Cranberry Township, on Rt. 19 near I-79.

The event is "Your Own Words," a monthly meeting organized by the store. It's described as "a hybrid between book group, author appearance and your standard workshop." The meetings take place the first Thursday of each month, starting at 7pm.

For my part, I'll be speaking about online publishing -- describing the markets that are available and ways to find out more about them. I'll also make suggestions for how online writing is similar to and different from print writing.

If you've an interest in being published in an online journal or magazine, or if you want to learn about becoming an online publisher yourself, stop in. I'd love to have a few friendly faces in the crowd. You can find directions at the B&N website. I hope to see you there!
