Julie LongJulie Long

Julie is talented enough (maybe crazy enough) to have always earned her living as a writer. She honed her skill as a wordsmith in the advertising industry, where she learned to turn even the dullest corporate dirge into a satisfying sales story. She also learned to make every word count. And that you don't have to write only what you know if you can research like mad. Case in point: Julie's first book is about baby care. And she's never had one.

Julie co-authored BABY: An Owner's Manual , a humorous book of operating instructions for new parents (Broadway Books/Random House 2003). The book went into its second printing just four months after its release, and has quickly become a perennial favorite and borderline prerequisite baby gift. It has been featured across the country in newspapers and magazines, and on radio and TV, including the nationally syndicated radio show "Family Talk" hosted by Dr. Mike Riera, Parenting Correspondent for the CBS Saturday Early Show, who called it "the kind of laugh-aloud book every new parent needs." The book also garnered the 2004 Drake Award for excellence in design from the Advertising Federation's Central Oregon chapter.

Most recently, Julie's work has been published in Chicken Soup for the Fisherman's Soul (May 2004). The personal story was the impetus for On the Third Day , a memoir she's completing about the sudden death of her father when she was nine.

Julie's writing has also appeared in local Pittsburgh newspapers and various trade publications. She has written corporate annual reports, newsletters and communications materials for a variety of industries, including financial services, high-tech and non-profit. Her print and broadcast work for her clients, as well as her promotional pieces for her own business, have won awards in the advertising industry.

Julie volunteers at The Caring Place, a center for grieving children and their families, where she assembles quilts to honor their lost loved ones. She is active in the P.E.O. sisterhood, a philanthropic educational organization, and was the charter president of her chapter.

Julie lives on a farm with her husband and two very spoiled English Bulldogs, who bear an uncanny resemblance to the canine companions in her novel-in-progress. To learn more about Julie's work, visit her website, Julie Long Writes.
